MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume)

MCV shows the average size of red blood cells. It helps classify anemia: low in iron deficiency, high in B12 or folate deficiency.

Normal ranges

Adults: 80–100 fL.

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, chronic disease.

High levels:

Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, alcohol, hypothyroidism.

When to see a doctor

If outside the reference range — usually evaluated with hemoglobin and ferritin.
