Ferritin

What is it?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. It reflects iron stores. Low levels indicate deficiency; high levels may mean iron overload or inflammation.

Normal ranges

Men: 30–300 ng/mL. Women: 15–150 ng/mL.

Units: ng/mL

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Iron deficiency anemia, heavy periods, blood loss.

High levels:

Hemochromatosis, inflammation, alcoholism, iron supplements.

When to see a doctor

If low — for anemia treatment; if high — to rule out hemochromatosis.
