Serum Iron

What is it?

Iron is needed for hemoglobin synthesis and oxygen transport. Serum levels fluctuate throughout the day.

Normal ranges

Men: 12–31 µmol/L. Women: 9–30 µmol/L.

Units: µmol/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Iron deficiency anemia, blood loss, chronic disease.

High levels:

Hemochromatosis, iron supplement overdose, hemolysis.

When to see a doctor

If abnormal — ferritin and TIBC are usually checked too.
