Hemoglobin

What is it?

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide back. Low levels indicate anemia; high levels may suggest dehydration or polycythemia.

Normal ranges

Men: 130–160 g/L. Women: 120–150 g/L.

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Iron deficiency anemia, blood loss, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic disease.

High levels:

Dehydration, smoking, high altitude, polycythemia.

When to see a doctor

If levels are abnormal, or you have weakness, shortness of breath, or dizziness.
