Adults: optimal < 3.0 mmol/L; lower targets apply with high cardiovascular risk.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Hyperthyroidism, malnutrition, severe liver disease.
High levels:
Diet high in saturated fat, obesity, hypothyroidism, genetics.
When to see a doctor
If above 3.0 mmol/L, especially with hypertension, diabetes, or smoking.
