Total Cholesterol

What is it?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance needed for cell membranes and hormone synthesis. High levels increase cardiovascular risk.

Normal ranges

Adults: 3.6–5.2 mmol/L (ideally < 5.0).

Units: mmol/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Hyperthyroidism, liver disease, malnutrition, malabsorption.

High levels:

Poor diet, hypothyroidism, diabetes, obesity, genetics.

When to see a doctor

If level is above 6.2 mmol/L or you have risk factors.
