HDL Cholesterol
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) removes excess cholesterol from tissues to the liver. Higher levels are generally associated with lower cardiovascular risk.
Normal ranges
Men: > 1.0 mmol/L. Women: > 1.2 mmol/L.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, some medications.
High levels:
Regular aerobic exercise, genetics; very high levels are rarely harmful.
When to see a doctor
If below 1.0 mmol/L (men) or 1.2 mmol/L (women) — assess cardiovascular risk.
