What is it?

Triglycerides are the main type of fat in blood and a source of energy. High levels are linked to pancreatitis and cardiovascular risk.

Normal ranges

Adults: 0.5–2.0 mmol/L.

Units: mmol/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Hyperthyroidism, malnutrition, malabsorption.

High levels:

Obesity, diabetes, alcohol, hereditary hypertriglyceridemia.

When to see a doctor

If level is above 2.3 mmol/L.
