Albumin is the main protein in blood plasma, synthesized by the liver. It maintains oncotic pressure and transports hormones and drugs.

Adults: 35–50 g/L.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Liver disease, kidney disease, malnutrition, inflammation.
High levels:
Dehydration; true overproduction is rare.
