What is it?

Bilirubin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin. Processed by the liver. Elevation causes jaundice.

Normal ranges

Adults: 5–21 µmol/L.

Units: µmol/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Rarely significant.

High levels:

Hepatitis, gallstones, hemolysis, Gilbert's syndrome.

When to see a doctor

If elevated and jaundice appears.
