ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)

What is it?

ALT is a liver enzyme. It rises when liver cells are damaged (hepatitis, fatty liver, medications).

Normal ranges

Men: 10–40 U/L. Women: 7–35 U/L.

Units: U/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Usually not clinically significant.

High levels:

Hepatitis, fatty liver disease, hepatotoxic drugs, alcohol.

When to see a doctor

If elevated more than 2x the upper limit.
