Platelets (PLT)
Platelets are blood cells responsible for clotting. Low counts increase bleeding risk; high counts increase clotting risk.
Normal ranges
Adults: 150–400 ×10⁹/L.
Units: ×10⁹/L
Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Viral infections, autoimmune disease, bone marrow disorders, medications.
High levels:
Iron deficiency, inflammation, infection, post-splenectomy.
When to see a doctor
If below 150 or above 400 ×10⁹/L, or with bruising and bleeding.
