Cortisol

Cortisol is the main stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It regulates metabolism, blood pressure, and stress response. Levels peak in the morning and fall by evening.

Normal ranges

Morning (8 AM): 170–540 nmol/L. Evening values are roughly 2–4 times lower.

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Adrenal insufficiency, pituitary disorders, long-term corticosteroid withdrawal.

High levels:

Stress, Cushing's syndrome, depression, corticosteroid medications.

When to see a doctor

If abnormal with fatigue, weight changes, or blood pressure issues — endocrinologist.
