Prolactin

What is it?

Prolactin is a pituitary hormone that stimulates milk production. It rises during pregnancy, stress, or with prolactinoma.

Normal ranges

Men: 53–360 mIU/L. Women (non-pregnant): 40–530 mIU/L.

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Rare, pituitary insufficiency.

High levels:

Pregnancy, prolactinoma, stress, certain medications.

When to see a doctor

If elevated with irregular periods or low libido.
