What is it?

TSH is a pituitary hormone that regulates the thyroid. It rises in hypothyroidism and falls in hyperthyroidism.

Normal ranges

Adults: 0.4–4.0 mIU/L.

Units: mIU/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone overdose.

High levels:

Hypothyroidism, iodine deficiency, thyroiditis.

Any deviation requires thyroid function evaluation.
