Uric Acid
Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism, excreted by the kidneys. In excess, it crystallizes in joints and causes gout.
Normal ranges
Men: 200–420 µmol/L. Women: 140–360 µmol/L.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Low-purine diet, certain medications, liver disease.
High levels:
Gout, kidney disease, red meat and alcohol, metabolic syndrome.
When to see a doctor
If elevated with joint pain, or repeatedly above the reference range.
