What is it?

Glucose is the main energy source for cells. Levels are regulated by insulin. Elevated levels may indicate prediabetes or diabetes.

Normal ranges

Fasting: 3.3–5.5 mmol/L (70–100 mg/dL).

Units: mmol/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Fasting, insulin overdose, liver disease.

High levels:

Diabetes, prediabetes, stress, certain medications.

When to see a doctor

If fasting level is above 6.1 mmol/L or below 3.0 mmol/L.
