Progesterone
Progesterone is the hormone of the second half of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy, produced by the corpus luteum. It prepares the uterus for implantation.
Normal ranges
Women: follicular phase < 1 ng/mL, luteal 2–25 ng/mL, pregnancy much higher. Men: < 1 ng/mL.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Anovulation, luteal phase defect, ovarian insufficiency.
High levels:
Pregnancy, ovarian cysts, rare adrenal tumors.
When to see a doctor
For cycle problems, infertility workup, or to confirm ovulation (day 21 test).
