Potassium

Potassium is a key electrolyte for heart rhythm, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Both low and high levels can be dangerous.

Normal ranges

Adults: 3.5–5.1 mmol/L.

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Diuretics, vomiting, diarrhea, low intake, hyperaldosteronism.

High levels:

Kidney disease, ACE inhibitors, tissue breakdown, acidosis.

When to see a doctor

If outside the reference range — abnormal levels can affect the heart.
