Homocysteine is an amino acid involved in methylation. Elevated levels are linked to cardiovascular risk and often reflect B12, B6, or folate deficiency.
Normal ranges
Adults: 5–15 µmol/L.

Causes of deviations
Low levels:
Not clinically significant.
High levels:
Vitamin B12/B6/folate deficiency, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, smoking.
When to see a doctor
If elevated — check B12 and folate, assess cardiovascular risk factors.
