What is it?

AST is an enzyme in the liver and heart. It rises with liver damage, heart attack, or muscle injury.

Normal ranges

Men: 10–40 U/L. Women: 7–35 U/L.

Units: U/L

Causes of deviations

Low levels:

Usually not clinically significant.

High levels:

Hepatitis, heart attack, muscle injury, statins.

When to see a doctor

If elevated, especially together with ALT.
